Lapis Lazuli is one of those gemstones that I put in the high tier list. Though, a lot has made a lot of fakes of such items as well, especially since there are synthetics , though if you are someone who handles cystals and gemstones on a daily basis, it shouldn't be that hard to know which is real ans fake. A lot of lapiz lazuli are dyed to look like them and if not, actually are poor quality types that have been dyed to make it look of high quality so that it can be sold at higher price, so please be careful. 
Lapis Lazuli tends to be cool to touch even when you hold it for a long period of time. At anytime you rub  it with acetone and it has a fading factor, is usually the biggest indication if it is legitimate or fake. They are also hard to scratch ho with glass though it is possible if you use a knife. You also need to be aware that it is mlstly confused wjth Sodalite which is actually a semi-precious stone -  not a lapis lazuli, but would have a component of lapis lazuli.  Synthetics are usually more opaque than the natural lapis lazuli. A high quality lapis lazuli always will have an ultramarine color and will have depth in color. A true lapis lazuli will "always" have iron pyrites that resembles gold dhst witin the stone. It shines in sunlight - it usually should have its streaks of white that denote the presence of calcium. 
Note: If you encounter a lapis lazuli that looks perfectly in rich blue tone without the flecks of gold or even white streaks, the odds that what you have is not a real lapis lazuli. Ultimately, the best practice is to always buy your stones, crystals and gemstones to reputable stores that has credibility with respectable price and value. Do know that lapis lazuli is actually highly valuable but this is normally hard to find and not always available either, which is why for many real collectors, it is still best you get the real thing than cheap imitations. Lapis LaUlis are rarely perfect in color as its beauty is in its imperfections, yet you should be able to see through the real  and authentic quality from not.
